Walk 7: A Ramble to Churchill Mill

3.5 miles / 5.7 km (approx  1¼ - 1½ hours)

Map Walk Seven

This is a short walk through meadows and cereal fields.  It crosses Bow Brook twice, firstly by Edward’s ford and again next to Churchill Mill.  The mill is a pretty, stone-built, Grade 2 listed private dwelling next to the remains of a series of mill races supplied by the brook.

My favourite time of year to walk this route is Winter on a cold, crisp, clear day.

Churchill Mill

  1. From the Village Hall go down College Road onto Pershore Road (B4082) and turn R after Cutts Pool onto Cowsden Lane.  Follow the lane for around 200m; between the allotments and playground and turn R, through a small copse.  Go through the gate and diagonally across the field to the small gate in far corner, to the R of the barns.
  2. Turn R after the gate, into the next field then immediately L along the edge of the field then turn R to join and follow the track through 3 fields to Lower Cowsden.  Turn R and follow the lane out of Lower Cowsden to the crossroads and cross Peopleton Road.  Go down Edward’s Lane and cross Bow Brook over Edward’s Bridge.
  3. After the bridge, continue straight on along the R edge of the field.  About ¾ way across the field, go R through the wide gate, cross the track and through the gate into the field opposite.
  4. Follow the Bridleway on the R of the field, L round a corner and through the second gate R.  Follow the Bridleway along the R of the field, through the gate at the far end and turn R to join a track.
  5. Follow a Bridleway through the gate along the L side of the field; about half way along the field go R (NE) down to cross the bridge over Bow Brook by Churchill Mill.
  6. Go straight up the slope, following the footpath to the R of the old hedge line then branch slightly R to the gate in the middle of the field boundary.  After the gate go diagonally up the slope and through the gate in the top R corner to join a track.  Go over Peopleton Road, along Holy Oak Farm drive, through the farmyard and over a stile into a field and head towards the school.
  7. Walk along The Furlong and School Lane past the Church back to the Village Hall.
